本科目是自然科學的智性探索，範圍包括最基礎的兩個部門:物理科學與生命科學。古希臘哲人開 展了以理性探索物理世界和生命世界的傳統，為現代科學奠定了基礎。這種對大自然的尋問帶來反 思，反思人類對大自然的理解以及他們在自然中的地位。
本科著重提升同學們讀原典、論原典的能力。老師選輯了關於哲學、科學及其歷史的文獻，供學生 閱讀和分析，從而讓他們了解影響深遠的科學概念、科學方法、科學家的學術追求，及科學發展與當 代生活的連繫。同學須發揮批判思維，就指定篇章進行深入討論，並提交論文，表述個人反思和分析 的結果。學生透過這些學習活動，應能培養能力與熱誠，將來繼續與科學文本對話。
